Frederick Alfred DIXON was born in Newmarket in Q1-1897 [Newmarket 3b:524] to Frederick Alfred and Alice Emily DIXON (née SHARMAN) of Stanley Road, Newmarket.
1901 census...Frederick [4] was at Stanley Road, Newmarket with his father Frederick[40], stable groom born Newmarket; his mother Alice [35] born Northampton his brothers Charles [10]; Gordon [5] and Cecil [3] and sister Nellie [8 months]. All the children were born in Newmarket. 1911 census...Frederick [15] was with brother Charles and his wife Bessie at 23 Churchgate Street, Bury St Edmunds. His parents; younger brothers Cecil; Harry [7] and Albert Edward [5] and sister Nellie had moved to 4 Green Road, Newmarket. |

He enlisted in Newmarket. His service records have not been found. His death would have occurred during the Battle of the Somme at High Wood. On 8th-9th
September 1916 the 2nd Royal Sussex and the 2nd Kings Royal Rifle Corps captured Wood Lane to the south-east of High Wood, there was little success in the wood
itself. Out of 98 2nd Battalion Sussex Regiment men killed on 9th September 1916, only 35 have known graves, the rest are named on the Thiepval Memorial |
